Atlanta Youth Learn Basketball Drills, Technique and More at DeMarre Carroll’s Next Level Basketball Camp

Atlanta, GA. 5 August 2015— This past week, dozens of children from all over the Georgia and Tennessee areas had the pleasure of attending DeMarre Carroll of The Toronto Raptors Next Level basketball Camp in Atlanta; a first time location for the annual camp. This youth camp, presented by Carroll’s foundation Carroll Family Foundation, was held in the heart of the city at Grady High School. As children lined up at the gym doors for basketball camp, they were greeted by athletic trainer and coach, Matt Kirkpatrick, of Altamont School in Birmingham, Alabama.

Coach Matt broke down all the children in to groups based on age. Each age group then had a respective coach who focused on drills, techniques and tricks which were appropriate for the skill level and age. After a few hours of running drills with DeMarre and coaching staff, the children refueled with a delicious lunch each day provided by the amazing staff over at Zaxby’s store on Ponce. Day two of camp, children then had the opportunity to play one on one with the Raptor himself, with one lucky camper scoring a layup on DeMarre. The day carried on with more 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 games concluding with a defensive drill lead by DeMarre.

On the last day of camp, DeMarre had a few special surprises for the campers who worked diligently during the three-day camp. Zoo Atlanta popped in for a special presentation of two reptiles; ED the boa constrictor and Nonda the rare lizard. The children were in awe as Emily the Zoo Handler informed them of all the traits and characteristics of the two animals. Everyone had a chance to ask questions about the Zoo and even left with petting ED, their new found friend. Camp then went along with normal programming until Rachael Colon of Ice Ice Ladyarrived with a countless array of ice cream novelty treats for all the campers. As the kids finished eating their Sponge Bob and rocket popsicles, they then all regrouped in the center of the gym for the awards ceremony.

DeMarre and Coach Matt identified the top teams, individual players and all-around players who would earn a medal for their dedication. Two lucky campers received the prestigious “Junk Yard Dog Award” named after the Junk Yard Dog himself, DeMarre Carroll. “Basketball was such an important part of my life growing up that I wanted to make sure that I provide these kids with the opportunity to work and perfect their craft with an NBA player such as myself who can really show them the ins and outs. As my motto states ‘Hard work is a talent’… So that has been the theme for the week”, Carroll states.

We’d like to thank the Next Level Basketball Camp Atlanta sponsors:the Carroll Family Foundation, Suntrust Bank, Atlanta Entertainment Basketball League, Zaxby’s on Ponce, Zoo Atlanta and Ice Ice Lady.
